Scheduling an Appointment

If you would like to discuss any of these options with a counselor, please consider scheduling an Initial Consultation. To schedule an appointment an Initial Consultation, please come by our office on the second floor of the Smithgall Student Services building (Flag Building) between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday, and allow about 30 minutes to complete the initial information forms. If you are a new client or a returning client who has not been seen in the last six months, you will need to complete the initial information forms once again. The last time to begin new initial information forms is 4:15 pm. The Center closes at 5:00 pm.

If you are experiencing a crisis that requires immediate attention please visit our page for students in crisis.

Students may schedule a first appointment, called an Initial Consultation, to meet with a counselor to discuss their concerns and to develop an initial plan for addressing them. This appointment is scheduled for 45 minutes, and follow-up appointments may be scheduled as necessary. During this session a counselor will assess the student’s functioning and reasons for seeking services are evaluated. The goal of the Initial Consultation is to determine the nature and impact of the presenting concerns and discuss options for addressing these concerns. If counseling is appropriate, the intake counselor will recommend the most effective method of treatment, which may include one of our Life Skills Workshops, self-help resources, individual, group, or couple's counseling, and/or referral to the Psychiatry Clinic of the Stamps Health. In some cases, the intake appointment is sufficient in helping students address their concerns. When a student’s presenting issues require on-going longer-term care or specialized treatment that is not provided in the Counseling Center, we utilize our Referral Service to provide a connection to an off-campus community provider coordinated by our Case Manager.

Please arrive on time for your appointment to avoid rescheduling or a shortened meeting with the counselor. Call the Counseling Center if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment.

Eligibility Statment

All students currently registered in a degree-seeking program are eligible for services at the Counseling Center.  A student must be registered in the current semester to utilize our services.  If a student is on co-op or internship and not registered for classes, then they would not be eligible during that semester.  In this instance we would be happy to provide appropriate referrals for services.  See our Referral Services page for more information.
